A podium on Pirelli World Challenge debut for KIA After driving for Kinetic motorsports in 2011 Ben couldn’t wait to team back up with a lot of the same personnel who he worked with last time around. Driving the works number 36 KIA Donorschoose.org entry, testing went well, getting progressively faster each session and eventually ending up p2 overall, just behind his experienced team mate, Mark Wilkins.

After such a promising start to the weekend, qualifying resulted in a disappointing 9th, as the British driver struggled to get the best out of the new tyres in his debut in a front wheel drive car.

Race 1 started promisingly with a good start resulting in Ben quickly rising to 8th at the end of lap 1. Good overall pace, and some timely overtakes saw the number 36 KIA rise to 5th by the flag, finishing just a couple of tenths of a second off 4th and picking up valuable championship points to kick off the 2015 campaign.

With the weather turning for race 2, the 20 car strong grid lined up in very wet conditions. Grid positions for race 2 are determined by the driver’s fastest lap in race 1, which saw the donorschoose.org KIA line up 8th. As the 50 minute sprint race got underway a brave move around the outside of turn 1 saw the experienced Brit up to 5th. Consistent fast laps quickly saw the Kinetic Motorsports driver challenging for 3rd and then up to 2nd with 10 minutes remaining. Fastest race lap and a late challenge for the lead, bringing the gap from 16 seconds to 3.5, was a satisfying way to round off the weekend.

Ben was understandably delighted afterwards. “What a weekend! I didn’t know what to expect going into round 1, having not raced on the circuit or in the car before, and not knowing most of the opposition. I couldn’t have wished for a better start and to come away with a 2nd position in only my first weekend is fantastic. I have to say a massive thank you to KIA and Kinetic Motorsports for making me feel so at home in the team and giving me an excellent car. I can’t wait for round 2 on the streets of St Petersburg!”
