Pole and a Win in Spanish GT Finale After uncharacteristically struggling in testing, the duo weren’t sure how they were going to fare come qualifying. They needn’t have worried though with Ben jumping in for qualifying 1 and producing his best result of the season, ending up pole some half a second clear of the rest of the field. Next up it was the Portuguese’s chance. Another good performance by Francisco put the number 32 Ginetta 4th on the grid for race 2.

The young Brit started race 1 not knowing it was destined to end prematurely. After being boxed in at the start he found himself back to 4th, over 5 seconds off the leader at the end of the 2nd lap. Unperturbed he set about making up the lost ground and had hauled the Escuela Espańola de Pilotos run Ginetta back onto the leaders tail shortly before the pitstops. Having done the hard work, as he was about to make his move for the lead, smoke began to come out of the back of the car. Understandably cautious, the team asked it’s two lead cars to hold position. Unsure if the number 32 Ginetta was leaking oil, the last thing they wanted to happen was the Portuguese/British duo to pass their teammates, who were leading and fighting for the championship. Shortly after the pitstops the race directors decided enough was enough and pulled the car in for an early retirement.

Fired up for race 2, everyone in the team wanted to make up for the disappointment of what had happened on the previous day. This time it was the Lisbon based driver’s turn to start and he did a fantastic job, so that after all the pitstops had taken place they found themselves in 2nd with the young Brit back at the wheel. Having been the pace setters all weekend it was only a matter of time before they were up to the lead and bringing home a memorable victory.

Ben was ecstatic afterwards. “It’s been a fantastic weekend. We’ve had unbelievable pace the whole time and to qualify pole by such a margin was a great result. Obviously it was a slight shame about race 1, but to bounce back with a win and finish the season on such a high is a great feeling. The team and Francisco have done a superb job all season, I can’t thank them enough.”
