International GT Open Championship Monza October 6th/7th 2007

A frustrating end to a weekend which started promisingly.

The team entered the meeting with no great expectations. The Porsche is not well suited to tracks with long straights like Monza, being about 15km slower than some of the other cars in the class. However, testing went well and so did qualifying. Francisco qualified 6th in the first session, and Ben qualified 4th in the second - quickest of the Porsches.

As always, the speed of both drivers is key to getting a good result, and on that score Francisco and Ben looked like a strong pairing. A podium looked possible - but it was not to be.

Francisco took the start in the first race but a puncture on the first lap dropped the car to the back of the field. After the handover Ben had fought his way back up to 8th when the rear tyre exploded, ending the charge as he struggled around the whole lap with no left rear tyre.

Quite a few competitors also had rear tyre failures - Porsches being the main casualties with their rearward weight distribution. After discussions with the organisers and tyre manufacturers, the team reluctantly decided it was not safe to compete in the second race and withdrew the car. A disappointing end to the weekend.

It was the first time Ben had had to withdraw from an event in his career.

"It was a real shame as obviously you go to a weekend wanting to race, but under the circumstances it was probably the most sensible decision."
